Why your Chilli & Papaya isn't tasting that good lately?

* Leaf 12 - New Moon - 23 Dec 2022*         Dear friends, It's time to sharpen our focus on Life's essentials - the taste and smell of Native vegetables & fruits, the great works of Leaf compost, the blissful state of spinning and more...  The last village tour to Sunkathonnur alemaney was fun and educational. Read on for more..... Shakthidhama School children exploring Prakriti Food     Have you used Leaf compost for your Garden? Adding compost to the soil increases its water holding capacity, maintains its temperature and facilitates the soil bacterial processes which improves the availability of mineral salts to the plants. When newly fallen leaves are added directly to the soil without composting it first, the microbes that decompose the leaves compete with the growing plants for soil nitrogen - leading to nitrogen shortage. The organic matter is a good source of food for the des

Spinning a musical tale with Mukhtiar Ali

* Leaf 11 - Full Moon - 06 Dec 2022*         Dear friends, Music & spinning brought us all together for the Sufi singer Mukhtiyar Ali's exclusive music concert on 5th Dec evening  at Prakriti premises. It was also a moment to revere the 135 year old building Margosa Lodge, with its colonial architecture & madras terrace roofing system, standing majestically like the old English woman of yesteryears. Hope our collective energy is sustained further on community development activities around farming & spinning.  Time & Space connects us all. All through the Human history, the Day-night cycle, the monthly (lunar) cycle and the Seasons cycle (Solstices & Equinoxes) are the 3 cycles that are tracked by Humanity and all calendars across civilizations are derived based on these 3 cycles.  The 2 Solstices and 2 Equinoxes in a Year are considered the four pillars of the Earth Time, which are crucial to measure our journey around the Sun.   As Thea puts it:  To lose sigh

Organisms that are genetically modified need not go into our Stomachs

* Leaf 10 - New Moon - 23 Nov 2022*         Dear fellow-beings, Farmers and Scholars from all over India gathered in Mysore for the 3 day Sammelan from November 11th to 13th at the KSOU (Karnataka State Open University) campus. The venue was brimming with energy and activities that brought life to the Soul of Agriculture in India. Everything was organic about the event. There was no plastic wares used, no thermocol-PVC banners, no hi-fi advertisements. It was a good demonstration of an eco-friendly event with the participants displaying comradeship and positive spirit all through. No disposables were used during the 3 days and all plates and tumblers were cleaned by the participants themselves after the meal. If only all such gatherings can follow this example.... And another point worth mentioning is the lack of any sponsorship logos and big promotional banners for products/services though some corporates has given a sizeable amount of donation for the success of this event. Let t

Dreaming for a Self-reliant India

* Leaf 8 - New Moon - 25 Oct 2022*         Dear Friends, If no major change has happened in your day-to-day Life after the last 2 years of Covid crisis, you perhaps belong to the top 25-30% of the Indian population economically. The lower strata of the Indian Society is fighting to make their ends meet and India's ranking in the Global Hunger Index (107 out of 12) reminds us of that suffering and pain to a great extent.  The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool for comprehensively measuring and tracking hunger at global, regional, and national levels published jointly by 2 civic organizations, which is being published since 2000. GHI scores are based on the values of four component indicators - undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting and child mortality. After understanding its calculation methodology and comparing the last few years' results (since 2006), one can see some consistency and truth in the report, which should make us all ashamed. Let's do our bit to

The road to Swarajya

* Leaf 7 - Full Moon - 09 Oct 2022*         Dear Friends, Since we started publishing our fortnightlies 4 months back, some of you have been asking why is it being published on New moon and Full moon days? Well, the intent is to keep track of the moon calendar. Moon plays a vital role in the health of our body / mind and the plant kingdom too follows the moon calendar for its sprouting, flowering and biomass growth. This role of Moon would be explained in detail in the coming fortnightlies. And we would like to hear your experiences on Amavashya and Pournami days..... October 2nd was Gandhiji's birth anniversary. Of all things that epitomizes Gandhi, 'Be the Change' and 'Hind Swaraj' are the two most fundamental tenets that denote the two ends of the spectrum within which all of Gandhiji's teachings can be fitted it. 'Be the Change' is about now, being at the individual end of the spectrum that tells us that individual discipline and personal integrity
